Heels in NYC: Yay or Nay?
As if magically in time for spring wardrobe inspo, Sex and the City is on Netflix.
As if magically in time for spring wardrobe inspiration, all 94 episodes of Sex and the City are streaming on Netflix. I, like many NYC obsessed girls, am obviously taking this opportunity to re-re-re-watch the series. I don’t know whether it was Carrie hailing a cab in Manolos or the strappy sandals I spotted in the ongoing Cult Gaia sample sale, but all of a sudden I can’t help but wonder (pun intended): Should I be wearing heels more often in NYC?
There are two dueling voices in my head here.
Yay
Voice #1: Represented by my mom, whose vintage collection is the source of most of my heels and who tells me I look like I’m 16 in flats
Top arguments
5′2″ me can’t see at concerts
Every outfit looks better, and so do my legs
I feel like Carrie Bradshaw
Nay
Voice #2: Represented by my boyfriend, who has to deal with the aftermath of me in heels, i.e. foot massages and running out to buy me bandaids
Top arguments
I exclusively take the subway or walk
I blister easily
New York is gross
With strong arguments on either side, I decided to play out a few plausible scenarios I might find myself in.
Scenario A: It’s a beautiful mid-80s day and I’m headed out for dinner at my corner bistro or, more likely, for sushi down the block. Ok my mom is right - wearing heels is obviously the way to go.
Scenario B: It’s raining and I have to take 2 transfers to get to work. I could get away with sneakers but isn’t this a perfect opportunity for platform booties?
Turns out I’m a yay…At least until the subway turns into a sauna this summer.
